The assignment was carried out in the design and build formula as part of the project entitled “Improvement of Water, Wastewater and Sludge Management in the Ostrów Wielkopolski Agglomeration”, co-financed from the Cohesion Fund under Priority Axis II “Environmental Protection, including Adaptation to Climate Change”, Measure 2.3 “Water and Wastewater Management in Agglomerations”, of the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Programme 2014–2020. The Wodkan company received co-financing of PLN 7,892,250 for the investment, with the total value of the investment amounting to PLN 15,522,374.
As part of the investment, the raw water aeration system and all technological pipelines distributing water within the station were replaced. Nearly thirty-year-old, corroded black steel was replaced with stainless steel. The emergency shut-off and control valves installed on the pipelines were replaced with new ones by Hawle, fitted with automatic actuators by Auma. New coatings were applied to the walls of 15 open filters and the sub-filter tank, using Kerasal micro-silica spray mortar. In all filters, the worn beam-grid drainage system was replaced with modern drainage made of corrosion-resistant high-density polyethylene. The electrical installation, including lighting and automation systems, was also replaced, along with the outdated control cabinets, which were replaced by two mobile panels. As part of the assignment, two air dryers with their installation were mounted, the backwash pump was replaced with a new one, three overhead travelling cranes located in the filter hall were modernised, a UPS was installed to maintain strategic electrical circuits in the event of a power failure, and window, door and gate joinery was replaced.
The entire assignment was very challenging to carry out, as the modernised water treatment station is the only station supplying water to the residents of Ostrów Wielkopolski. It is worth noting that all works carried out as part of this investment were performed at the continuously operating station in such a way that the residents of Ostrów Wielkopolski would not be affected. The main objectives of the modernisation were to ensure failure-free operation of the facility, to maintain the required water treatment efficiency, to improve automation through the use of modern control technologies and new software, and to optimise the station’s operating costs. It is worth emphasising that the modernised two-stage filtration system using gravel and manganese ore beds enables the highest water quality to be achieved, allowing the residents of Ostrów Wielkopolski to drink it straight from the tap.
